Note Text Replaced by Black or White Box in Published Simulations

Symptom

After publishing simulations on the uPerform server, the note or action note text is replaced with a white or black box. These boxes may also appear in note callouts in published PDF and Word format Work Instructions.

Explanation

This problem occurs after installing the Microsoft Windows Server Security Update KB3057839. The security update prevents a service that builds the notes during the publishing routine from running. The blocking of this service during the publishing routine results in the boxes appearing.

Resolution

We have created hotfixes to address this issue for the following uPerform versions:

5.02.1 - ANCILE uPerform 5.02.1.128 Hotfix

5.12.1 - ANCILE uPerform 5.12.1.42 Hotfix

5.20.x - ANCILE uPerform 5.20.7 Server Update

Note: Customers licensed through the SAP Global Maintenance Agreement must submit a ticket via SAP Service Marketplace to request the above hotfixes.

    Hi,
    I have a few questions:
    What is causing the text to be covered up? All of the documents published after this update are affected! How can we prevent this from happening again?
    Is there a workaround other than uninstalling the security update? What happens when the update is re-installed? Will the issue come back? Or will this update be replaced by a new one? Our security standards are quite strict so we may not have a choice about uninstalling these updates.

    Hi Everyone - I have a quick update. We have a development team currently dedicated full time on a fix for this issue. In the meantime, I have added some additional information to this KB article including more details on the root cause, and a couple of temporary workarounds.     One of the recent Microsoft security updates seems to have resolved this issue for us. I'm not sure which KB since several were installed on the same day.

    Symptom

    Explanation
    This problem occurs after installing the Microsoft Windows Server Security Update KB3057839.

    Resolution
    ANCILE is working on an update to address this issue. In the meantime, we recommend uninstalling Microsoft Windows Server Security Update KB3057839 and republishing the affected simulations. Please contact your IT or network administrator before performing this action and proceed with caution. Removing any security update may make your server vulnerable to one or more exploits addressed by that update.

    Hi Everyone -

    We have just released hotfixes to address this issue in uPerform 5.02.1 and 5.12.1, both of which are linked in this KB article. The fix for uPerform 5.20 will be included in the uPerform 5.20.7 update which is currently undergoing final testing.

    Our testing has shown that Microsoft Windows Update KB3070102 also resolves this issue, but we do recommend installing the hotfix or upcoming 5.20.7 update to prevent the possibility of this issue from recurring following the installation of any subsequent Windows updates.

    I will post another update here when 5.20.7 is released.

    Thanks for the update Chandra. Is there an estimated date when 5.20.7 will be released? We were starting the process to test an upgrade from 5.0 to 5.2 when this issue began, so we're deciding whether to wait for the 5.20.7 release if it will be soon, or if we should apply the hot fix now.

    Thank you for the update. Has anyone experienced an issue with Work Instruction or other output template formats, except simulations, not appearing?

    We are currently on version 5.10, and for various reasons are not updating the server at this time. As part of routine maintenance, Microsoft Windows Server Security Update KB3057839 was installed and caused the black box issue to occur on simulations published to the server. We have since installed Microsoft Windows Update KB3070102 and it has corrected the black box problem. However, we no longer see work instructions published to the end user site. The drop down menu which normally appears in the upper left-hand corner is not appearing at all. I have submitted a ticket with Ancile, but am wondering if anyone else is experiencing this?
